We decided to take the plunge and do a teenage room makeover…specifically a hangout for our teenage or near-teen boys. When we built our home, we were basically just happy to have the additional space for our guys. Now, I think we’ve lived her long enough that it’s finally time to do something awesome with this room.
Creating Awesome Teenagers Rooms
The bonus room furniture is perfectly fine. Nothing is wrong with it at all. My only issue is it doesn’t work how I want in this room. Simple as that. We are replacing it with this charcoal sectional.
The budget was set for the room ahead of time, and now it’s game on working some magic bringing a vision to fruition. A feature I’ve wanted for a while are built-in storage units. Custom by my pal, Maynard would have blown my budget to smithereens. No fear, Pinterest and IKEA to the rescue for ideas galore!
This built in is of particular inspiration. Primarily, because she used the IKEA Billy bookcase horizontally, opposed to vertically. I also LOVE before and after pictures, especially when the change is SO dramatic. It’s remarkable how the addition of bookcases changed the look of her room!
Sadly, our room arrangement is not this cut and dry. It’s a bonus room over our garage. “Over the garage” equates to wonky wall angles. After searching on IKEA’s website, I discovered the Galant office furniture system. My initial vision included doors, but the options for the Galant were not my forte. They are much too commercial looking. I opted for all open shelving and will use storage baskets to hide the ‘stuff’…all’s good. Here’s a peek at what the shelving straight out of the box.
The finished version won’t look like this, but the Galant are the bones, along with the long tall Billy bookcase that you see above the door in my inspiration photo. In my opinion, inspiration is important when planning out a room. What is unfortunate when looking for ideas, is the lack of teenagers rooms, specifically for teenage guys. Inspiration photos abound if the design focuses on girls, but it’s a whole other story for the dudes.
My goal is to combine a fabulous room where my guys want to hang out. But it also has to work with my design tastes too. This little mixture makes for a tricky balancing act! Right now there is a little debate on the chair. The room itself it quite large, however, it’s narrow which means the one accent chair needs to be on the smaller side if one can fit at all.
We have a tonal blue chevron rug that I plan on keeping. It looks good, hides dirt and is durable: triple score! I repainted the former green room to this lovely Sherwin Williams Front Porch.
After putting everything together yesterday my husband determined that the time involved to get the built-in’s how I want them to look will take 20 – 30 hours. YIKES. A bit more than anticipated but that’s how we roll. I ALWAYS think things should cost less and projects will be completed fast!
Here is the overall vision for the room. The chair is what is under negotiation so it may change but truth be told, I’m leaning heavily on that blue Ikat straight from Target! Tell me your thoughts on my plan. Does this seem to meet the wants of the parties involved?
