The updated teen guys room is finally ready for its reveal! Week 6 is finally here! Cannot even believe how fast it went. This updated guys room turned out better than I had expected. It’s also proof to me that sometimes, waiting to fully decorate or redecorate a room is the best choice. Are you familiar with ORC? Twice a year, Linda from Calling It Home hosts a One Room design challenge. It’s a way for designers and bloggers to support each other, give ideas and cheer each other on. This week everybody is sharing their final reveals! There are some seriously amazing designers out there!
If you missed the weekly updates, links are listed below. I must apologize here that week five is missing. Life happened, and I was unable to post anything last week. Sorry about that.
Now, onward to this updated teen room final reveal! First, when I design a room, there are a few goals I set. For this project, the primary purpose was to create a high-end designer look on a budget. Folks, that’s no easy task given the amount of furniture I needed to purchase. Including a bed and mattress! Rest assured creating an updated teen room can be done on a budget! Keep reading for proof! One last thing: this post is photo overload.

Updated Teen Room: The Final Reveal
This fabulous space is at the end of a long hallway. Therefore, I wanted it to be visually appealing from the hall. First, what we see is the desk area of the IKEA hack built-in. No joke, the built-in has completely elevated the style in this updated teen room! Had we not gone forward with implementing this component of the plan, the impact of the room design would not have been as great.
Aside from the built-in’s being extremely functional, I’m a bit in love with how it all came together. The initial plan called for a white finish. Thank goodness my insightful 12-year-old informed me it was too girlish and ‘no-thank-you.’ I toyed with still buying white but painting it gray. Thankfully, that was a fleeting thought. Too much work and the walls are a beautiful neutral color. Furthermore, repainting the walls was not part of the plan. The brown-black finish from IKEA is pure perfection for this project.
The built-in unit is the perfect combination of masculine, modern and classic. No nagging little voice whispering to me: ‘this is temporary.’ As a bonus, the price point for the items is fantastic. I need to add it up, but I want to say that in total all materials came in at around $400 or slightly less!
Fabrics play a fundamental role in most of my designs. This guy’s updated teen room is no exception. When choosing fabric for a room, I like classic prints and colors. Timeless prints and color provide many years of use without making the room appear dated.
All the fabrics came from IKEA. The gray buffalo check and striped ticking fabric are perfect for this room. At IKEA it was thrilling to see the gray has a warm tone versus cool. The only non-IKEA fabric item is the modern red quilt, which is from Target.
Wall decor plays a pivotal role in personalizing a space. It was important that the decor reflects this kiddo’s personality and style. He’s into sports, music, American history and videography. So, the wall decor reflects those interests.
We found the map above the bed at Hobby Lobby in the poster section along with the corresponding frame. The colors are perfection for this updated teen room.
If, when, he grows tired of the map, we can easily switch out the poster and reuse the frame!
The watercolor canvas above the rustic magazine rack is an original! Cole created this piece of work with his grandpa about four years ago. It’s been hanging in this exact spot ever since. It’s my favorite piece int he room.
The blueprint art, however, is my nonsentimental favorite! Check out that blue background color! I found the frames at HomeGoods. However, they were an odd color so, with a little paint, they now match the built-ins.
There is a great Etsy shop that specializes in downloadable blueprint art. Within moments the I had the prints sent to Costco and got my order was ready within an hour! What a budget and time saver!
When it comes to lighting, I ‘m a bit smitten! First, wall lights free up flat spaces on a desk and nightstand. Second, no need to worry about a fallen lamp. Thirdly, wall lighting adds style and function to a room.
The sconces above the bed are perfect for bedtime reading! We opted to not hardware any of the sconces. Mostly because I like flexibility. One day, when I want to change things up, I won’t have to worry about drywall repair!
So there you have it. An updated teen room reveal. The room came together beautifully and I love how the design speaks to his personality. Now, I just need to convince the other two boys to let me work in their rooms a little bit!
